For this 09 Burner Irons, TaylorMade adopted entirely new design on the long irons, medium irons and short irons respectively. TaylorMade irons creating team began with 09 Burner Irons #4, and took the following methods to create further distance and higher forgiveness. The club face was made as thin as possible to be elastic enough for higher speed and COR. TaylorMade 2009 Burner Irons used tailor-made 450 stainless steel alloy with higher intensity, allowing the thickness of almost all club face to reach to 1.9mm. 09 Burner imbedded the Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) on face back, which allows faster speed even on miss-hits. The 09 Burner head was enlarged to realize higher MOI than the previous TaylorMade irons, and the sole was also widened to lower the center of gravity and make CG far from the club face. This is rare in making long irons. 09 Burner Irons increased the face offset to make it easy for the face back to original state at impact. The top line was thickened so that golfers can feel larger clubhead when aiming to enhance confidence. Finally, 2009 Burner Irons have longer lightweight shaft and grip.
The medium irons aim to create longer distance and higher accuracy. They have thinner face for high COR although their face is thicker than long irons. The short irons aim to create higher accuracy and faster response speed. They are also supposed to ensure enough ball distance. The head of 09 Burner short irons is more compact. Their face is also thin but thicker than medium irons face. The new 09 Burner short irons realize more accurate response, feel, control and playability. Each club in 09 Burner Irons adopted multi-functional sole design to reduce the turf resistance when swinging, allowing more smooth and power. All of the clubs used ICT on cavity back to increase the face area providing faster speed. With the multi-layer construction made of carbon composite material, aluminum and ABS polymer, the cavity back can help reduce vibration and noise. Each club in this iron set has more consistent performance.
